Understanding Running Pace
Pace is expressed as time per distance unit (min/km or min/mile). It's the inverse of speed: a pace of 6:00 min/km = 10 km/h. Slower pace = higher min/km number. Elite marathon runners race at ~2:49 min/km; recreational runners typically range from 5:00 to 8:00 min/km.
For race training, knowing your pace helps you dial in the correct effort for different workout types — easy runs (aerobic base), tempo runs (lactate threshold), and intervals (VO₂ max).
