How Much Mulch Do You Need?
Mulch is measured in cubic feet, cubic yards, or litres. The recommended depth is 5–10 cm (2–4 inches): enough to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but not so deep it suffocates plant roots. For new beds, use 10 cm; for maintaining existing mulch, 5 cm is usually sufficient.
Always buy slightly more than your estimate — it's better to have a little extra than to run short. Bulk mulch (by the cubic yard) is usually cheaper than bags for large areas; bagged mulch is more convenient for small jobs.
lightbulb Example
10 ft × 4 ft bed, 3 inches deep:
1Vol: 10 × 4 × (3/12) = 10 cu ft
22 cu ft bags: ceil(10/2) = 5 bags
